Description
Every year the community of Emmett puts on a great display and as you can see the crowd is starting to gather. Fireworks promoter Barbara Huguenin talked to local businesses about supporting the fireworks show at the Gem Island Sports Complex. Businesses were offered challenges including $175 and $150 donations. The community also donated to the fireworks account.
A large thermometer was placed in Huskie Park with the amount growing as the months passed. About $10,000 was needed to pay for the fireworks before March 1.
Over $11,000 was raised in three months including an anonymous donation of $1,000.
For the past few years the fireworks shown were high quality from Fireworks of America. They have done shows for the Super Bowl, Walt Disney and Sea World. According to volunteer coordinator Tim Simpson, this year will have over 1,900 shots and an additional 900 effects.
A total of 30 to 40 volunteers will set up the show, light the fireworks, do crowd control, place barricades, take down and clean up the next day.
Volunteers like to light the big fireworks, he said. Some of these volunteers work 13 hours a day for the fireworks show and leave at midnight after it is over.
Twelve titanium salutes will fall during the 30-minute show with multi-colored giants and a few surprises in the mix.
Families are encouraged to bring a picnic, chairs or blankets. The fireworks begin about 10 p.m. No personal fireworks are allowed on the island. The Gem County Sheriffs Posse will patrol the area. Organizers ask people not to bring dogs to the island during the fireworks show.
