Description
While taking a photos of the Emmett Valley, I looked to the side and saw the beautiful sky forming over the Old Freeze Out Road.
Before Highway 16 was blasted out of the hillside, Old Freezeout Road was the only path into Emmett from Boise or anywhere south. From downtown, the snakelike road climbing out of the valley is clearly visible. Full of switchbacks, hairpin turns and bleached sandy cliffs, Freezeout Road is now used as a scenic byway. Cyclists, pedestrians and equestrians frequent the smooth blacktop of Old Freezeout, training or leisurely enjoying the twisty three-mile climb while feasting on heart-stopping views at every turn. You can climb the hill on any type of bicycle. Some prefer mountain bikes, while others like the thrill of climbing and descending on road bikes. If you walk it, a good pair of sneakers are worth their weight. Automobiles are also allowed on Old Freezeout. Most visitors stop at the overlook near the top to bask in the views of the valley floor and Squaw Butte to the north. Find the top of Old Freezeout by turning west from Highway 16 at the summit, or heading south of town about a mile on South Johns Avenue.
