Description
The San Juan Island Archapelago consists of a staggering 172 islands, some only visible during extreme low tide (look out boaters!), and well over 300 miles of shoreline. The three largest islands are geographically unique: Orcas being the hilliest (The tallest peak is Mount Constitution at almost exactly a half-mile elevation.), Lopez the flattest and best for easy cycling and San Juan Island is a combination of both.
The shorelines are a combination of sandy, pebbly and rocky beaches, offering clumps of bull kelp, tangles of ceday, madrona and fir driftwood. Shallow harbors offer safe harbor to shallow draft vessels like hayaks and small motorboats and deep harbors provide perfect moorage for sailboats and larger yachts. Just consult your charts before you choose which ones work for you.
Sucia Island Marine Park is located just north of Orcas island, and is considered by many to be one of the San Juan's most beautiful destinations. Sucia island is not reachable by car or served by the Washington State ferry system yet it is one of the most popular marine parks on Puget Sound with more than 100,000 visitors recorded each year. Its 11 islands with unique sandstone formations has become a favorite destination for Bellinghamsters and boaters from both Washington and Canada. The unique terrain of this 564 acre island park accommodates its visitors in 6 different bays and coves- each of which has its own unique personality. Echo Bay - Fossil Bay - Ewing Cove - Snoring Bay - Fox Cove - Shallow Bay.
If you prefer solitude you might prefer to visit during the week or in the off season, or choose one of Sucia's smaller coves like Snoring bay. but if the weather or your free time are a consideration you shouldn't wouldn't worry about what day of the week you visit Sucia Island marine park. There tends to be a camaraderie amongst boaters that can make meeting new people a pleasure.
