Description
For some reason this tiny church in Yuma, Arizona really intrigues me. I first heard about it after reading Roadside America's list of small churches in the US. MSNBC also has an article online about roadside churchs that mentions the Yuma one.
A sign outside the church reads "Stop, Rest, Worship." It's located on Highway 95, some ten miles north of Yuma. It seems to be always open, and the interior is immaculately maintained by the farmer who owns the land. It's 9 x 15, and it can barely seat twelve people. The original purpose of the farm is said to be for migrant workers who worked the nearby fields. Another story suggests the farmer built it to honor his wife.
If you do visit, please note that this is on private land, and a few reports indicate there's a supposedly-friendly pit bull that lives on the property and sometimes comes out to greet visitors. Also, there's no air conditioning in this thing, and as you can imagine, the temperatures in the summer can be just a bit north of sweltering.
Diminutive roadside chapel, adorable symbol of understated Christianity, open to weary travelers.
I-8 exit 12. North on Fortuna Rd for two miles, then north on US 95 for a little over five miles. The church is just north of the Bridge to Nowhere -- within view of its towers, in the middle of a crop field, to the west of US 95.
