Artist's Description

The first cutting is only a few weeks behind most of the years.

Idaho ranks fourth nationally for production of alfalfa hay. Production has increased in recent years to meet the demand of Idaho's burgeoning dairy industry. Production in the east and south-central areas lead the state. Jefferson County with 80,700 acres of alfalfa is the leading county in the state.

Statewide, growers harvested 1 million acres in 2011 (the latest year in which statistics are available). The average yield was 4.3 tons per acre.
