Description
While fishing for catfish and getting ready for an outdoor meal I notice this beautiful sunset forming so dinner had to wait for a little while.
Fortuna Pond is a popular camping and fishing destination in the Yuma area. During the winter months, largemouth bass, channel catfish, sunfish and rainbow trout can be caught in the 8.5-acre pond. You may fish from the shore or utilize a small boat. The site is open year-round; however, Yumas summer temperatures can reach 120 degrees, so please prepare accordingly if you plan on visiting in the summer months.
Fortuna Pond is located approximately 12 miles northeast of Yuma, AZ.
It's a small (8.5 acres), elongated lake. It reminded me of a campground without actually being a campground. It receives heavy use. It is open on the north side and surrounded by Tamarisk trees on the other. The open side was bumper to bumper RVs. The south side is good for small rigs, tent campers, and those w/o solar. Big rigs cannot maneuver past the trees and low hanging branches. It also allows for some privacy. I squeezed into a spot in the trees with quite a nice buffer between me and my neighbors (100'+?)... until the weekend crowd arrived. Locals tent camp here with their kids on the weekends.
The ground near the lake is a hard packed sand and dirt mixture. The further you get from the lake or road, the softer it becomes.
The temperature was a pleasant 75F in the shade. The wind was constant and varied between a light breeze to down right gusty. The sky was clear and the sun was harsh.
Noisy yet peaceful. Happy people and birds talking during the day, coyotes talking at night. There was the constant white noise of a distant train. A couple times an hour, vehicles and aircraft serenade you as they pass by the area. Bombs close enough that you can feel them, slightly. Generators are all the rage at Fortuna Pond (on the south side anyway). Seek solitude elsewhere.
